Senate to Vote on Revised Bailout Bill

After the proposed 700 billion dollar bailout bill failed in the House of Representatives on Monday, major political leaders urged the congress to take immediate action on revising the plan in order to make it pass. Today, a revised bill will be introduced into the Senate, in hopes to save the current failing economy.

Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Senator, says it would “shield Americans from a shockwave of problems they didn’t create.” Senator Harry Reid hopes that if the Senate shows a strong example of bipartisanship, the House of Representatives would be encouraged to do the same. Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain will be returning to Washington D.C. for the vote that will take place later today.

Obama stated while speaking in Reno, Nevada, that without this bill “millions of jobs could be lost, and a long painful recession could follow. There will be a time to punish those who set this fire, but now is the moment for us to come together to put the fire out.”

xPirate’s thoughts on the matter: I think in previous posts I’ve already said that I thought it was necessary for this bill to pass. I guess we’ll find out later today. Stay tuned for updates.

Recycling Now Comes With Coupons!

Boston has started giving its citizens an incentive for going green. Large recycling bins containing high tech equipment scan each household’s recyclables for a radio frequency ID tag and then weighs the amount recycled that week. This information is transmitted to a website that awards points that can be redeemed for discounts. “It’s like a frequent-flier program for recyclers.”

The system is ran by a company called RecycleBank who’s main premise is to turn trash into treasure. Their goal is to be serving 1 million people by the end of 2009. The company is very focused on going green and thought that more people would recycle if they could get something back for it.

SOURCE

xPirate gives a response: Gosh. I’m such a conflicting person. I’m very happy that this company is trying to encourage more and more Americans to recycle, but what pisses me off is that people feel they need incentive to do it! Is it not good enough that you are saving the Earth from the mass destruction that you are the direct cause of?

But I’m not going to bother all of you with my opinions on the stupidity of ignorant humans. I want to try and focus more on the technological side of these mechanisms. First of all, I didn’t know my recyclables are tagged with a radio frequency ID. Are people tracking my trash? And if so, why? I guess I just don’t fully understand that part of it. One question I have is, how much do you have to recycle to get a relevant amount of points? Because if you’re looking at needing a crap-ton of trash just for like $1 off some soda, that’s not very good personal gain. Of course, I don’t believe you should recycle for personal gain in the first place, so it doesn’t really matter.

World Economy Continues to Spiral Downwards

Today the House of Representatives convened to vote on the $700 billion dollar bailout plan that would buy bad mortgage debt from large banks and firms and give them an opportunity to get back on their feet. The plan failed with a vote of 228 to 205. Both President Bush and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown expressed their disappointment in bill’s failure.

Traders on the floor in Wall Street were not pleased. Shares dropped a record amount today, falling 770 points. Wachovia, the fourth largest bank in the US, sold to competitor Citigroup.

The problem is no longer just here in the US as major foreign markets fell drastically today. Without the bailout plan, many more banks and investment firms will bust. Nancy Pelosi stated, “The legislation has failed, the crisis has not gone away.” Republican house leader claimed a speech given by Pelosi, “poisoned our conference, caused a number of members that we thought we could get to go south.”

Presidential candidate John McCain claims that the Democrat’s partisan speech as being unhelpful. He stated, “Now is not the time to fix the blame, it’s time to fix the problem.” He encouraged congressmen to try and work out a new deal immediately.

Opponent Barack Obama expects a bailout bill of some form to pass. He is upset that the mess on Wall Street has transferred to the average citizen. He says, “If I am president I will review the entire plan the day I take office to make sure that it is working to save our economy and that you get your money back.”

SOURCE

xPirate’s thoughts on the situation: I’m very worried now that the bill has failed. With the markets falling as much as they have recently, we are heading very quickly toward another Great Depression. I personally expected the bill to pass, but once again, Republicans bring a halt to our glimmer of hope. I’m pissed that once again partisanship and stupid bickering in Washington has led to nothing being done! Do these politicians just not realize that we are in a state of crisis? We can’t wait for the parties to agree on everything.

ASE Calls for Asteroid Defense

Earlier last week a group of space explorers from the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) held a meeting with the UN in which they highly recommended an international defense in case a dangerous object such as an asteroid were to be headed toward Earth. It’s been 65 million years since such an event. In 2004 there was a scare with the asteroid Apophis which was recalculated to not be a threat. ASE has predicted there will be an immediate threat within the next 15 years.

Schweickart, an astronaught working with the ASE, says that they do not expect the UN to carry out an space missions, they just want somebody in charge of decision making. He says, When you have an asteroid threatening Earth, it’s uncertain where it’s going to hit until the last minute; the decision to take action has to be coordinated by the international community…. We’ve developed a program to get the international community prepared to make timely decisions so the technology we know we have can be used to protect life”

There have been several proposals in the past years on how to deflect an asteroid. The main proposal by the European Space Agency would involve sending up two space crafts. The first craft would plow into the asteroid while the second craft would check for a change in trajectory.

SOURCE

xPirate offers his thoughts: I’m still deciding whether I see asteroids as a direct threat to Earth right now. I think, given the 65 million years since the last major impact, that we’re probably due for something soon, right? Or not. Either way, it’s important to have a plan in case there was such a threat. The problems I see are that any asteroid that’s going to cause a big threat wouldn’t be easily moved by an man-made spacecraft. Perhaps if there is an asteroid headed to wipe all of us out, maybe it’s just our time to become extinct and we should accept that. Of course, scientists would never go for that.

Soulja Boy – The Next Big Game Designer?

American rapper, Soulja Boy, famous at school dances and night clubs for his hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” has new and exciting plans for his career. In a video interview that can be found on JoyStiq, he announced that he “wants to get into things like video game design and web site design.” He also wants to attend college but says he’s unable to because he is a “superstar.”

xPirate Cranks Dat Soulja Boy: Dot dot dot, question mark? I don’t even know where to begin. I guess I’ll start with the fact that in high school these days, if you don’t know the Soulja Boy dance you are shunned, hated, and sometimes even killed. Well, maybe not that extreme, but it is taboo to not be familiar with it. I’m wondering what kind of video games he plans to make? If it’s another Grand Theft Auto type criminal game, then he’s just going to further the rapper stereotype and humiliate himself. If he wants to intelligently design a game that gamers are going to be able to enjoy for hours on end, then I’m all for it. But if his game is anything like his music, you’ll be Superman out killing hookers.

I also wonder if he knows how much time and effort it takes to design a game. I’ve personally tried getting into the business but simply lacked the availability to get it done. So if he’s thinking it’s all the fun of playing games itself, he’s got another thing coming.

I wish him the best of luck and hope that he does decide to go to college. He’d probably be the first rapper to do such a thing. Nothing against rappers, it’s just most of them these days only talk about how much weed they smoke and how much they have sex. And while weed and sex may be important to the college atmosphere, it is most certainly NOT a reason to go to college. So good luck Soulja Boy and if you do manage to break into game design, PLEASE don’t make crappy game!

Cadbury Chocolates Recalled for Melamine

British chocolate company Cadbury announced today that they would be recalling 11 different types of chocolate after tests showed they contain Melamine. Melamine is a chemical used in the manufacturing of plastics and has also recently been found in baby formula. The chocolate, as well as the baby formula, was made in Chinese factories. A company spokesman told the press, “These are preliminary findings from tests. And it’s too early to say where the source was or the extend of it.”

SOURCE

xPirate’s thoughts on the subject: This hasn’t been the first time we’ve seen contaminated products coming from China. It certainly won’t be the last. My personal opinion, they don’t like us and are trying to KILL US ALL! Okay, that may be a little extreme. I’m not sure if I believe that the chemicals found in the products were there by accident though.

Tina Fey is Sarah Palin

Tina Fey is back again on Saturday Night Live (SNL) portraying presidential vice president candidate Sarah Palin. After a stunning opening performance two weeks ago, Fey is back again as Palin, this time parodying her press interview that took place a few days ago. A highlight from the skit includes Fey’s Palin stating, “Katie, I’d like to use one of my lifelines…I want to phone a friend.” It goes on to include one of the governors quoted lines from the interview, “Well, in that case, I’m just gunna have to get back to ya.”

The first parody by Fey and Poehler featured a conversation between Sarah Palin and Hilliary Clinton. The humorous skit was a hit, which is quite possibly the reason Fey was back again as Palin. Many fans concur that Tina Fey looks incredibly similar to Palin and would love to see more. It is unsure whether Fey, who is currently working full time on NBC’s 30 Rock, will once again become a regular on SNL.

SOURCE

xPirate Sends His Love to Tina Fey: First things first, this is the girl that brought us Mean Girls, one of the best movies of all time! Every time I’ve seen her perform, I’ve loved it. There’s no going wrong with Tina Fey. She’s a stunning actress, wonderful at writing comedy, and all around amazing in every way.

As far as the parodies of Sarah Palin, pure genius! I believe she accurately portrays the Alaskan governor, both in physical appearance and mentality. My favorite line of all so far was in the first skit where she said, “I can see Russia from my house!” I probably laughed for like 20 minute straight. This girl has got some real talent and I hope to see her a regular on SNL again.
